Poker Texas Hold'em
Poker is a game of skill. In poker, strategy is as important as luck. So basically, anyone can become good at poker. It is one of the reasons why poker is one of the world's best known card games. Even here, there are many types of poker, but one game stands tall among them all. That is Texas Hold'em poker. Popularly known as Hold'em, this game has become the darling of poker players around the world. It is played both at bricks and mortar casinos and online casinos.
However, live casinos are slowly becoming the preferred medium of poker players because of the inherent advantages (please see our recommendations of quality online poker sites).
What are the basic Texas Hold'em rules?
Each player is given two 'hole cards', which will be known to the player alone. There are also five 'community cards' which make up the 'board'. Each player then tries to use his 'hole cards' and the community cards to create the best possible 'hand'.
The pot will go to the player who has the strongest 'hand'. In some cases, all but one of the players will fold, in which case the pot will go the player who has not folded. The idea is not to win each hand but to make psychologically and mathematically correct decisions on when to continue playing, when to call, raise or fold. This maximizes the player's chance of winning a pot, which in turn affects their long term wins.
All cards are randomly dealt by the dealer. The cards are outside the player's control. The only thing a player can control to some extent is the pot. This again depends on the cards they have or how they predict what the other players have.
The history of Texas Hold'em poker
Texas Hold'em was born in Robstown, Texas though we know little about how it was invented. It was probably developed sometime in the early 1900s. The game came to Las Vegas, Nevada which is considered the 'Mecca of Gambling' in 1967. Until then, aces were considered low. Now they have become the highest value cards.
The game got a fillip after it was introduced in the Gambling Fraternity Convention, which is now known as the World Series of Poker. After that, there was no looking back for the game and it expanded rapidly. Now, it is played all over the world, its popularity buoyed by television events, online live casinos and many books on the subject. It has even overcome seven card stud as the most popular card game in the US.
The game attracted more attention when amateur poker player Chris Moneymaker won the 2003 edition of World Series of Poker. Chris actually qualified for the tournament by winning a game on a live casino. He even wrote a book on his experience called Moneymaker: How an Amateur Poker Player Turned $40 into $2.5 Million at the World Series of Poker? It proved the long held hypothesis that anyone can become a poker player and you don't have to be a professional to make money off it.
How to play Texas Hold'em poker?
We said even amateurs can win. We did not say rookies. So before you start playing poker with real money, understand Texas Hold'em rules well and get them by heart. It is important or you can lose your money. The rules are quite simple really.
The aim of any Texas Hold'em game is to make the best five card hand and beat the other players on the board. The highest card is the ace and the lowest is the two. Betting occurs in an ante fashion. The hole cards play a very important role in the card rankings. Here are the card rankings.
Here is a small fact. The highest card ranking is the Royal Flush. A Royal Flush consists of the ace, king, queen, jack and ten, all of the same suit (either spades, hearts, diamonds and flush).
Why play Texas Hold'em on live casino?
Brick and mortar poker rooms can be intimidating for a novice, especially when you are sitting with professionals. Even if you prefer to play with people who you can see, you may have to travel to far off places to attend such games.
Moreover, not many brick and mortar casinos promote Texas Hold'em up, because they don't profit much from it. Even when they are making money off it, they have to bear opportunity costs. For instance, a typical casino will earn more from installing slot machines than by holding poker games. According to some sources, poker brings in just 1% of the income of a typical casino.
On the other hand, live casinos are much cheaper to run. The overhead costs are very small because you are not actually spending money on physical space. Online casinos also have low bets, some in the order of 1¢/2¢. Some poker sites don't charge anything for the first game. Now the question is what about online theft or online fraud? There are very little chances of this, because all payments are processed securely (the sites have SSL certificates). These sites also have special features that enable them to detect collusion (they can compare the 'hand' history of a player to see if they are cheating). IP address checking also allows the sites to reject players who might be playing from the same household.
